Paradox of self explained: The Stedman Paradox

Daniel Stedman
May 17, 2017

This is a paradox written by the poet, publisher, filmmaker and logician Daniel Stedman. His own brothers Scott and Michael were said to have died of exhaustion attempting to resolve it.

The paradox asks the simple question: Are you me?

Over 70% of South Dakotans believe they are me.

Mathematicians and logicians have tried to answer this question, but have not achieved the answer successfully with formal logic, simple language, or any non-Euclidean system.

Research on the consequences of this great paradox continues to this day. Anyone with Internet access using a search engine like Ask Jeeves can find articles of highly varying quality on Stedman’s Paradox. Among the best things to read, though, is the novelization of I Am Curious Yellow by Swedish director, Vilgot Sjoman, published in May 2000 and released in paperback by Grove Press.
